Did you know that the techie giant Microsoft started its operations during a recession period?

With very careful research and a well though out business plan, now is the right time to start or buy a business of your dreams.. A business with low start up costs preferably a home based with a flawless business idea and a great committed team can ramp up your business in a short time. The business that gets into the market during a recession always has competitive advantage over others who are hesitant to enter the market now. The best part is, when the economy comes out of recession, your business will be way ahead of your competitors, captured a wide market and closer to raising capital from VCs.

While starting a company without a lot of money can be painful, it also disciplines entrepreneurs with careful spending and maintaining healthy balance sheets. It helps them come out with a recession proof business idea after analyzing the trends and the success rates of the current business. Think of recession as a learning period when you have to restructure your business with wise decisions, while you also develop the strength, force and the patience to get over the adversities in your business. Two birds in one shot…eh?

Newly launched

If your website is newly launched, it has to work its way up to the front page of Google search results. Only after Google starts trusting you as an authority in the keyword targeted, will you find yourself climbing up the results page. The ‘authority’ factor to a good extent is proportional to how good a quality website can you offer visitors. There are tons of websites out there that are pretty good at selling goods and services, but does not have any competitive content which can be a forceful reason for lack in SE rankings. Visitors coming to buy a product or service would definitely like to obtain a detailed info on a particular item which can be a whole new page in the form of reviews, articles; ratings etc. (If it’s a new website, reviews/ratings can be imported from others)Write relevant and interesting content that your visitors find worth mentioning in their blogs, forums, and websites with web2.0 platforms. Offer a hundred reasons for visitors to come back and refer their friends. Your profile will slowly gain popularity in the market you are focusing and so does in Google. The secret formula is relentless superior quality work for your visitors and it will ultimately work for the search engines too.

Content not found by SEs

Say, if you have a content rich website and, but your URLs are not indexed in Search Engines. Search engines may find difficult crawling the website due to lack of ease in site navigation or you may have unknowingly blocked crawlers from accessing your data in your robots.txt file. The best solution is to register the website at Google webmaster central where you will obtain all the stats pertaining to Google Crawl, indexing info and more. If any of your pages are blocked, it’s identified in your webmaster account and the issue can be resolved immediately. You also enjoy the facility of submitting the sitemap to Google, in which case all your links will be crawled and indexed.

Duplicate Content for your pages

It’s a common practice nowadays to extract snippets of data or the whole data itself from a web page and post it as one’s own in their private Blog / website. It’s okay if they provide a link back to the parent website but if not, it’s a concern. Copyscape can help you determine if your data is stolen. Otherwise paste a small portion of your snippet from your web page to Google and perform a “search”. The website that stole your data is likely to appear in search results and not you in which case, contact the webmaster and request removal of content or look into enforcing copyrights for your content. If it’s your own site that has more than one URLs showing the same content, use the Meta robots = “No index” tag in the less priority pages to stop from being indexed.

Title and Meta tags Ignored:

They are key to any search engine rankings. Incorporate the right and logical keywords into the title and Meta tags. Limit the title tag to 60 chars and use the Meta description tags to speak to your visitors. Meta description tags are used by search engines as snippets of data in search results. It’s basically a short sentence or a few sentences of compelling advertisement about the content of the page to users in about 160 chars displayed in Google search results.

Wrong Keywords for your business

What’s the point if you are targeting for keywords that users never search? Keyword research tools like Google Adwords tool, Wordtracker, Keyword discovery tool all will help find the most matching keywords that are searched for pertaining to your content. Incorporate those keywords into your content and watch the difference.

Recently I was looking up a Chinese restaurant offering buffet services. Since a whole lot of them were appearing in Google map near my residence, I narrowed the list down to a few that had their own websites. I ended up dining at a restaurant which had a professional website detailing their menu (with prices), their locations, visitor reviews and surprisingly an extra feature of taking orders online. This was a perfect example on how a medium scale restaurant can attract visitors through a well presented website.

Having a functional website adds a substantial advantage to any business be it small, medium or large. Now, let me get to the point. If you are a business owner maintaining a website for your business, your next challenge is to make your business visible in search results.

Proper site optimization techniques for search engines will eventually attract tons of visitors to your website and hence your business.

The following are important SEO guidelines that will make a lot of difference for your business’ web presence.

Relevance
Popular search engines tend to have organic search algorithms, or in other words decide relevance of a search result like humans. If a website can ensure delivery of content intended to it’s full extend then it has a relevance of 100 percent.

Factors that ensure Search engine accessibility:

Your web site has to be congenial to search engine spiders. Take care of following to ensure that.

HTML and CSS validity: Validate your HTML and CSS pages and ensure that they are in compliance with W3C Guidelines

JavaScript links: Is some really great content of yours behind the JavaScript links?Search engines do not find these pages and hence neither do visitors. Take them out and implement HTML.

Size of the web page: Make sure that the web page does not exceed 150K in size to cache the entire pages henceforth.

Server speed: If the server down time and slow transfer speed is common, that can adversely affect your SE rankings and visitor loyalty.

NO BROKEN LINKS: If you have “page not found” pages on your website, take them out or redirect them. Broken links will bring down the quality ratings of your site.

URLs, title and Meta tags:

URL, the title for the web page and Meta tags are compelling components for your site rankings. It’s always a good practice to name the folders and sub folders based on the page topic to facilitate ease in navigation for visitors. Make sure to use static URLs as dynamic ones are difficult to crawl by search engines.

Deciding the “title” for the page is another crucial factor for high SE rankings.
A title should be concise but able to convey what the page is all about. For example: the website Acquireo.com specializes in businesses for sale, buying and selling businesses. What could be more appropriate that a title, say, Businesses for Sale-Buy-Sell-Find a Business today?

Make sure that you do not stuff keywords into the title and make it look spammy to SEs. Also I think that spammy titles drive away human visitors at seeing the unprofessional tactics adopted.

Meta Description tag though not important as it used to be is currently used by search engines as snippets for description in SE results when it does not find other relevant content associated with the website during indexing.

Search engines love plain HTML.

Embed all your content in HTML format. Text embedded via forms, javascript, images, Macromedia flash files are not crawled by SEs and some real good content is put to no use. If using an image, embed the right keywords in the Image ALT text to let know the search engines what the image implies.

Now comes the critical part! Writing Content for your business website

For newly launched websites, PPC Campaigns, advertisement in authority websites supporting the market niche, article submissions to directories, interesting write ups for social networking sites and the most important of all, quality and compelling content for visitors on your website. When your content is good, your website is bookmarked, mentioned in blogs, social networking sites, articles and more. Quality content can be a great way to drive traffic to your website.
Search engines, especially Google picks up these links to your website, trust you as an authority for the keyword and rewards you with a page rank (PR). Note that PR reflects the traffic to your website and incoming links. Informative content, active forums, videos on a service or product offered, a well written and active blog, ratings and testimonials of your visitors, informative articles, and advertisement on websites who are big players in the supporting niche are all factors determining your site’s rankings in SEs.

Other equally significant factors to consider before launcing the website include finding the right keyword for your business, deciding on a good and branded domain name and finalizing on a page design that can appeal your visitors.

Determine your competitors and closely study their site implementation methodologies, Work out affiliate/link building plans with websites of similar interest, Make press releases on a major milestone achievement. Actively participate in forums discussing your business.

All these techniques applied with perseverance will equip your business website to work it’s way up in the Search Engine Ladder.
